Today is Day 19 Friday July 25 2008
Well here we are in Gallup New Mexico on Route 66.
We left Arizona behind us yesterday afternoon. We would like to come back to Arizona someday soon. There is so much more to see and do in Arizona. We spent pretty much the last 3 weeks in Arizona and enjoyed every minute of it. We would like to get to see the Phoenix and Tucson areas of Arizona.
The first thing I want to do today is get the car washed, get some of this road dirt and dust off.
Then we are off to see the El Rancho Hotel in Gallup. Opened in 1937, this hotel is still in business today. A lot of famous people stayed here, including Ronald Reagan.
After leaving Gallup, we drove up and over the Continental Divide. Elevation 7245 ft.
We found some neat old ruins and crumbling walls of once thriving businesses on Route 66.
We found old weathered signs of businesses from long ago.
There are a lot of long lonely stretches of Route 66 through New Mexico. It is a very pleasurable and relaxing drive far from the Interstate.
We pulled into Moriarty New Mexico early in the afternoon. We are going to stay here for 2 nights. This is not a race to see how fast we can get home, we are on vacation so it is important to sit back and relax a bit. It will also give us a chance to do some laundry and get our suitcases reorganized.
