Day 8 Caribbean Vacation Xmas 2009

This morning at 8:00am we docked in Frederiksted St Croix USVI. We went upstairs to the Palm Springs Cafe where we enjoyed a waffle breakfast. Waffles with strawberries and whipped cream.

The sun is shining, the skies are blue and the temperature is 84 degrees.

Most passengers got off the ship at 9am but since we do not have any shore excursions planned for today we hung around onboard for a while. At 10:30am there was a practice drill for all of the crew. They had to simulate putting out a fire onboard and simulate evacuating the passengers by lifeboat. They practised lowering the lifeboats into the water and driving them around.

While this was going on, I worked on writing the blog and naming the photos. The crew then raised the lifeboats back onto the ship.

Karen and I went ashore around noon hour and did our own self guided walking tour of Frederiksted.

There was a pelican sitting on one of the bollards. I took a picture of Karen taking a picture of the pelican. She got pretty close to it.

We took some photos of our ship The Celebrity Mercury tied up to the pier.

Some photos of the old Fort Frederik that was built back in 1760 to protect the island.

Then we saw another bird, but are unsure what it is until we get back home and can do some research. Paying almost 50 cents a minute for internet access onboard the ship limits you to how long you want to be online looking up things. I tend to just log on, check and reply to emails, publish the blog and then log off as quick as I can.

There is a little sand beach near the foot of the pier, not the nicest beach in the Caribbean but Karen found some nice sea shells for her collection. There was also a good view of the ship.

We walked back to the ship and got onboard. We had lunch onboard at 1:00pm. This is our dessert for lunch.

We were going to lay on deck by the pool but around 3pm it started to sprinkle so I had a little nap in our room instead. At 5:30pm we went to a seminar about cruising and what cruises Celebrity will be offering in the future. There was a barbeque this evening on Deck 11 around the pool. There was a good selection of food and desserts. Here is one of the dessert tables.

The ship left Frederiksted at 5:00pm and we will be sailing 223 nautical miles through the night to the island of Antigua.
