We were in no rush this morning as we only have a 100 mile drive ahead of us. We slept in, had a late breakfast and checked out of the hotel at 11am.
There are a few historic buildings that we want to see before we leave town, so we drove around in the rain to find them.
The first is the Yorktowne Hotel. It has been open on the Lincoln Highway since 1925.
And the Golden Plough Tavern, built in the 1740’s has operated as a tavern for all of its existence. Made of half timber and half stone.
The Roosevelt Tavern and some other interesting buildings in York PA.
Just outside of York PA is Lee’s Diner where we stopped for a delicious lunch and took some photos.
This diner was built by the Mountain View Diner Company in the early 1950’s. These diners were prefabricated in the factory and then moved to their permanent locations across the country.
Onwards to our next stop which is O’Brien’s Restaurant and Motel. This was formerly the Lincoln View Motel. The main building is now a lounge/restaurant and the motel in behind is falling apart.
The 81 Diner another Lincoln Highway eatery.
Just a stone throw to the West is this Road of Remembrance Marker honouring those who served in WWI.
The Atland House, built in 1790. It received this present day facade in 1911 and continues to serve travellers as they drive the Lincoln Highway.
This part of the Lincoln Highway is well marked, you know you are on the Lincoln when you see these signs.
We arrived in Gettysburg around 2pm this afternoon. We worked on updating the blogs and uploading photos.
Tomorrow we will begin our tour of the town of Gettysburg and the surrounding battlefields.
